A Guide on How to Prevent Bunions

Bunions are one of the most common foot problems experienced by people all around the world. Research shows that roughly 1 in 3 adults will experience a bunion at some point in their lives. Despite how frequently bunions occur, there is no denying that they are one of the most painful health conditions one can experience. Bunions can make daily activities such as walking or wearing your favorite shoes difficult and can be a major hindrance to your daily life.

Bunions can be caused by a variety of different factors. Here are 3 tips on how to prevent bunions.

1.  Wear Proper Footwear

One of the most common causes of bunions is wearing shoes that do not fit. When you wear shoes that are too small or shoes that do not properly support your feet and toes such as tall high heels or platforms, you put yourself at risk for bunions due to the uneven amount of pressure that is placed on different parts of your feet. Wearing shoes that fit properly and allow plenty of room for your feet and toes to breathe, as well as opting for shoes that are comfortable and do not place an uneven amount of pressure on any part of your feet, is the key to avoiding complications such as bunions.

2.  Get Enough Rest

After a long day of walking or wearing uncomfortable shoes such as high heels, giving your feet time to rest is one of the biggest ways to avoid health complications, including but not limited to bunions. After a long day, soak your feet in soothing Epsom salts or just elevate them while you relax or sleep to ensure that pressure is taken off of them and they are resting comfortably. If you have to wear uncomfortable shoes for a long period of time, taking them off for a short period of time to give your feet a break can also help.

3.  Stretch

To help with pressure distribution and avoid discomfort and lessen the chances of dealing with bunions, try to stretch your feet, toes, and legs every day, or at least before and after wearing an uncomfortable pair of shoes or spending a lot of time on your feet. Stretching your feet and legs can also reduce other health complications and ease muscle pain as a result of strenuous activities, improper footwear, and other factors that can cause discomfort.
