The Voiles d’Antibes 2017

Les Voiles d’Antibes

The Mediterranean classic regatta season kicked off with a bang in early June, with the 22nd edition of the Voiles d’Antibes. It brought together some of the world’s most beautiful and historic sailing yachts to battle it out in the crystal clear waters off the Antibes coast. In this year’s event, 68 yachts competed for the coveted Panerai Trophy across 10 classes: Vintage, Classic, Metric, and Spirit of Tradition yachts completed the courses against the magnificent backdrop of Antibes’ ramparts and the Cap d’Antibes.

The Results

In the maxi yachts class, S/Y MARISKA comfortably took out the title, while S/Y CHINOOK dominated the Epoque competition, despite an impressive late comeback by S/Y LINNET. S/Y ROWDY and the 1937 S/Y SKYLARK easily won the Marconi A and Marconi B classes respectively, while S/Y JALINA outperformed the field in the Marconi C class. In the Classique Marconi B class, S/Y EA clinched four first places, while S/Y MARIA GIOVANNA II fought off S/Y ARCADIA for first place in the Classique Marconi C class, and S/Y ENCOUNTER took the Classique Marconi Racer division. S/Y TABASCO 5 raced home in the Spirit of Tradition class, and S/Y MINX collected first prize in the hotly contested Tofinou racing range.

About the Voiles

The Voiles d’Antibes celebrates the history and sport of sailing, from century-old yachts built before the First World War right through to modern yachts built to honour the classic tradition. Widely considered the friendliest regatta on the Mediterranean circuit, the Voiles d’Antibes 2017 put on another fabulous year of parties and entertainment. Bands performed in the regatta village in the shadow of the ramparts, and crowds gathering on the quay to see the impressive yachts return from the day’s racing.

The Classic Sailing Yacht Community

The classic yachts that gather in Antibes each June appeal to those with a penchant for seafaring in refined luxury. While the friendly competition and immersive yachting experience offered by the Voiles d’Antibes inspire complete sailing yacht charters, investing in a classic sailing yacht offers one the opportunity to gain entry into the classic yachting community. S/Y FLEURTJE is a stunning ketch that was built in 1961 and is offered for sale by Fraser. Her classic design and her recent refit make her an excellent opportunity to purchase a ready-to-race vessel that combines comfort with grace and performance. Experience first-hand the enthusiasm and spirit of the tight-knit classic sailing community. For those that missed out and want to find a classic yacht for sale or charter this summer, the next Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge regatta is the fabulously popular Panerai British Classic Week at Cowes, beginning on the 8th of July.
