Reinventing bicycle wheels – round and round no more!

bicycle wheel

Cool factor: A bicycle with polygonal and triangular wheels.

It’s good to know that they are not just busy cloning phones. The Chinese are good at other things too. The whole idea of re-inventing the bicycle wheel seems a bit weird to me, but that’s what Chinese inventor Guan Baihua has dared to do. The 50-year-old military officer from Qingdao has made an odd-looking bicycle with a pentagonal wheel at the front and a triangular wheel at the back. According to him, people are going to love it for its unique set of wheels. He says that since it will require more effort from a cyclist, it will provide more exercise to the cyclist than any other conventional bike.

The most interesting thing is that the edges of the pentagonal and triangular wheels are not perfectly straight. They have been bent in such a way that the diameter across the shapes is the same when measured from any point. Mathematics…huh? Startlingly, this unusual bike is being said to offer a smooth ride.

Well, I am not really interested to try this crazy bicycle, but for the daring thought, Guan Baihua definitely deserves a round of applause.
