Dogs have been humanity’s loyal companion for more than 14,000 years. While there are over 400 distinct breeds, pint-sized pooches hold a special place in the heart of many. They’re impossibly adorable, and their diminutive stature often means they have big personalities.

Check out five of the world’s smallest dog breeds below.

1. Miniature Pinscher

Miniature-PinscherMin-Pins are an energetic, fearless, and proud breed known as “The King of Toys.” Originally developed in Germany, they make excellent watchdogs thanks to their curious, intelligent, and territorial nature.

According to statistics from Furry Friends Gear, Min-Pins weigh around 8 to 10 pounds, with a height of between 10 and 12.5 inches. Their sleek black or brown and red coats are short and easy to maintain, too.

With a lifespan of 12 to 16 years, Min-Pins are fantastic family pets that enjoy playtime, walks, and snuggles. However, early training and socialization are recommended as they can be stubborn and mischievous.

2. Papillon

Papillon

A lovable breed that gets its name from the French word for butterfly, Papillons are bright, active, and friendly. Their winged-shaped ears, long, silky coats, and tiny build have inspired many artists, including Titian and Clouet.

These 11-inch tall pooches come in various combinations of white, black, orange, tan, and red. They weigh up to 10 pounds and have a lifespan of 14 to 16 years. Papillons are highly active, sociable, and curious, so they don’t make suitable lapdogs. However, they’re easy to train and can adapt to outdoor and indoor spaces without a fuss.

3. Pomeranian

Pomeranian dog

This tiny toy dog derives from the ancient Spitz breed and originates in Pomerania, located in Northern Poland and Germany. Pom-Poms are feisty, independent, and extroverted furballs that enjoy exploring and playing. They aren’t afraid to challenge dogs twice their size and can even come across as bossy.

However, training them early on will keep their rebellious streak in check. With a typical height of 6 to 7 inches and a weight of 3 to 7 pounds, Pom-Poms are incredibly cute and lovable pets. Their fluffy coats come in shades of tan, black, brown, or white.

4. Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu dog breed

These “Little Lions” originated in Tibet as far back as 1,000 BC. Known for their unique facial features, they have long coats and come in white, black, tan, grey, brown, or a combination.

Shih Tzus have a lifespan of 10 to 18 years, weigh between 9 and 16 pounds, and only grow up to 11 inches tall. They’re sweet, jovial, and easy-going toy dogs, ideal for families, couples, or individuals.

While Shih Tzus get along with other animals, they enjoy attention and can be strong-willed. Still, they’re obedient pups that adore praise and affection.

5. Chihuahua

ChihuahuaAs the smallest dog breed in the world, Chihuahuas only weigh up to 6 pounds and reach a maximum height of 5 to 8 inches. They were first discovered in the 1850s in the Mexican state with the same name.

Their short or long-haired coats are often sable, white, black, silver, brown, tan, or gold and can come in a combination, too. Just like their colors can vary, so can their temperament.

They can be sassy, stubborn, and confident, or more timid and eager to please. Still, they’re loyal, alert, and charming lap dogs that love attention and being close to their humans.

In Closing

Whether you enjoy the Miniature Pinscher’s energy, the Papillon’s curiosity, the Pomeranian’s independence, the Shih Tzu’s affection, or the Chihuahua’s charm, these tiny dog breeds all have something different to offer. They make adorable mini companions that come with dynamite personalities, too.
