‘Thermofocus’, a new thermometer is launched by a company called Kidz-Med Inc which claims it to be the first non- contact clinical thermometer in the world to take accurate temperature readings without even touching your body.
According to the company, the thermometer reads the infrared heat originating from the person’s forehead. Pointing the thermometer towards the forehead is important because the head is supplied with a good amount of flow of blood from the temporal artery that receives blood through the aorta and carotid artery. Also the forehead is closest to the brain and without any hair covering. However the thermometer also takes armpit and naval readings.
The thermometer apart from giving instant accurate readings, is a safe and modern device adhering to hygienic standards with no expensive accessories and has been approved by the FDA.*
The thermometer is very useful for taking temperature readings of patients and babies without disturbing their sleep. But in order to get correct readings it is important to move it close to the forehead at the distance as indicated by the product.
Apart from taking readings of body temperatures it may also be used for taking temperatures of baby formulas, bath water and food. The results by thermofocus are as accurate as a rectal thermometer and more so than an ear thermometer and can therefore be used by people of all ages.
