We have all heard about the underground apartments and buildings either due to lack of space or as a protection against the elements. However, this time it is an underground stadium that has been doing the rounds. The Wall in Doha, Qatar is the world’s first underground stadium and also the first open air air-conditioned area. The stadium would also lack floodlights and instead use embedded lights. Yet again, the architects claim the design is meant to offer protection against the unrelenting Arabian sun. The stadium should be ready by 2008. We wonder why the underground always has been the favorite for so many people, right from the snobbish Japs to the funky Montreal residents and now, architects in Qatar.
