A typical scene in urban cities would be vehicles slicing away on the road and leaving behind a burp of perilous gases. The D-day is not far when stepping out of our house without a pollution mask will become inevitable. But a bunch of Dutch researchers at the University of Twente have come up with a futuristic yet simple equipment of controlling air pollution- Cobblestones. With no robotic segments and complex compounds, such stones will surely be a breakthrough in pollution control techniques.

A special pavement made of cobblestones would be installed in the cities which will absorb the heinous toxins from the air. They wouldn’t be those ordinary granite cobblestones for they will be manufactured with a new type of concrete. With the presence of sunlight, these stones will convert the nitrous oxide compound into harmless nitrate. With the virtue of an additive, titanium dioxide, along with purification of air, muck and dirt won’t stay on the stones for long and are washed away with the rains. This idea had first hatched in the Land of Rising Sun (Japan). The city of Hengelo will be the first testing ground to assess the potential of such cobblestones.
